Arena’s Powerskin Carbon Pro to debut at British Swimming Trials

Tolentino, 03 March, 2012 – The Powerskin Carbon Pro, Arena’s latest swimsuit featuring the breakthrough technology of “intelligent compression”, will make its first appearance in a major competitive meet at the venue for this summer’s Olympic Games, the London Aquatics Centre. The suit will be worn by Arena Elite Team members Francesca Halsall and Hannah Miley as they compete for their places on the Great Britain Olympic Team in the British Gas Swimming Championships 2012 from March 3rd-10th.

Current European 100m freestyle champion Halsall hasn’t been beaten in a 50m freestyle final at the British Championships since first winning the title in 2005, while 2011 World 400m IM silver medallist Miley will be going for her sixth consecutive 200m and 400m IM double. As an open event, the British Championships also attract an impressive lineup of swimmers from outside Britain, among them Arena Elite Team members Milorad Čavić from Serbia, Denmark’s Lotte Friis, Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström, Germany’s Paul Biedermann and Marco di Carli, and Ireland’s Grainne Murphy. It will also be the first time that these Arena swimmers don the Carbon Pro in a major international event.

“I tried the new Carbon Pro suit during my training camp in Tenerife and loved it,” said Halsall. “The fit is perfect, it feels great in the water and I can’t wait to race in it.” She continued: “I’m also really excited about racing in the Olympic pool. It will be good to get familiar with everything and also experience having a crowd that is going to be made up of people cheering for me. I can’t wait, it’s going to be so much fun!” As exciting as the prospects of wearing the Carbon Pro and competing in the Olympic pool are for her, she’s keeping her feet firmly on the ground: “My expectations at trials are to qualify for the Olympic Team, I have no expectations as to what times I will swim, I just want to race as hard as I can to make the Olympic squad.”

Miley is equally enthusiastic about swimming at the Olympic venue: “I'm really excited, it's great to experience what it'll be like racing at the pool and get a feel for the atmosphere.” But she’s cagey about her expectations for the Championships (beyond the minimum for a world class swimmer): “I hope to qualify and make the team for London 2012, I'm keeping my specific expectations close to my chest as that's how I deal with pressure. I normally reveal my expectation after the event!”

Arena will formally unveil the Carbon Pro in the UK at a special event during the Championships on 5th March at 12:30pm. The event – to be held across from the Aquatics Centre at The Cow pub in Europe’s largest shopping centre (Westfield Stratford City) – will feature appearances by Fran Halsall and other members of Arena’s Elite team.
